As a proud new sponsor of Wire Reef, it is great to be able to present our upflow algae scrubbers here. The whole algae scrubber concept is new to most people, so don't feel left out if you don't get it at first. The biology is simple though: All the lakes, and all the oceans, are filtered by algae. So if you can grow the algae on purpose, where you want, and when you want, then it will absorb (filter) all the bad things out of the water, thus reducing or eliminating water changes and/or the other filters you may be using. Then you just throw the algae away, or feed some to your animals! So here are the different upflow algae scrubbers available:

2 LEDs to the rescue:

Nathan P. says this is just one week after his first HOG3 cleaning:

"This is one weeks growth [of a SURF2], I'm pulling out a lot more turf now it's certainly got a hold on the ribbons and the textured walls of the box. I tested phosphates a couple of days ago on the Hanna checker and it was reading 0. I did the test again because I've never had a 0 reading on this tank." -- Blinkyfish on the UR site:

After three more months of filtering, and ten more harvests, did the extra high output air pump help?...

"HOG1 is a great looking device, great instructions, very very happy" -- Pygmey on the R2R site.

Comment from Masgatigata on the R2R site: "I added my [HOG.5] scrubber almost 2 months ago. Since then I've noticed less and less nuisance algae in my display. I ordered a second one about two weeks ago bc I tend to feed heavy. I've been very happy with my purchase!"

"The [SURF2] at my office is doing great. I would like to order another one for my home tank". -- Thomas Perry

Updated recommendation: The SURF2 is for water with phosphate less than 0.2 ppm; if phosphate is higher, get the SURF2x

Another single LED:

"The algae still seems to be quite dark on the green grabber material but has grown a fluffy algae on the inside of the lid..." -- Centralscot on the scrubber site.

"Currently I have two algae scrubbers that I purchased from Santa Monica. SURF2 and SURF4. SURF2 is powered by Fusion 700 and SURF4 is powered by Coralife Super Luft SL-38. I can grow significant amount of algae in both" -- Tomasz Cop pic of SURF2 and SURF4:

"It's been a little over a month since I installed two HOG3 filters on my 165g tank. Any algae that was growing on my rocks (just one spot) is now gone. Best part, so is any and all cyano!" -- 3Twinklets on the R2R site:

Image

Pic from Damien Kwok; his SURF2 was put into a newly-moved tank, and this moving of the rocks killed the periphyton on the rocks which stopped the natural filtering and thus the phosphate went up higher than 0.2, which made the SURF2 grow dark:

Image

A SURF2x with stronger light would be better at this point, but the SURF2 is slowly catching up as long as he does not move the rocks or change the flow.

Eric75003 on the RF site, translated from French by google: "I have a surf2 and it is impeccable, it keeps my PO4 zero distributing 3-4 cubes of food per day. The HOG1 it's the same thing on a smaller scale, it depends on the amount of food that you distribute."

Translated from Portuguese by Google: "Earlier this year the glass of my [DIY] algae scrubber (Model Basso) broke. Due to lack of time and manual skills, not tinkered with skimmer and was only for a few months. decided to spend a little and bought SURF2 of Santa Monica, which measures 20cm x 15cm by 15cm x 10cm outside and inside (area for growth of algae). model is interesting because it is small and is floating in the sump. With that much space gained by removing the previous ATS. SURF2 installed but a few days after my skimmer pump has gone bad. In two weeks the ATS already started forming algae and I played without skimmer for almost one month, only with ATS. Even then parameters were normal. These are photos from yesterday, two months after installation. Already cleaned the box twice and am already almost needs to take algae again. algae that formed in my display during the relax (without ats and skimmer) have gone missing. With the lid closed does not make any noise. You hear only if they get too close" -- Luis Iarossi on the IPAQ site. Original text:

Coming soon: SURF8, SURF12, and SURF16

The largest scrubbers ever built for sale. They will be multiples of the SURF4, in both side-by-side and end-to-end configurations:

SURF8 (two compartments side-by-side)
SURF8-long (two compartments end-to-end)
SURF12 (three compartments side-by-side)
SURF12-long (three compartments end-to-end)
SURF16 (four compartments side-by-side)

The SURF8 will be the first one available. Each compartment will be isolated from the rest and will have a dedicated light, so you can harvest one without affecting the other(s), or so you can alternate photoperiods, or so you can add or reduce capacity based on feeding.

The lights will the the same as, and will be interchangeable with, standard SURF4 lights.

Here are the basic sizes for the normal versions...

"[HOG1] is working incredible well. Went from constant algae outbreaks (3-4 per year), to no algae at all. 10 yr old 250 gal reef tank, started developing blooms at year 7. Nothing else worked, even breakdown and rebuilds." -- Joe Lopez

"I love how my four SURF4 and four HOG3 units are constructed" -- Tim Caldwell

"Santa Monica makes a top notch product" -- TruRacr314x on the R2R site.

"I recent removed bio-pellets, GFO, and trimmed off a lot of macro algae. Oh yeah, overfeeding now to try and bring up my phosphates. Since removing a bunch of nutrient exporting systems like bio-pellets, GFO, and a second algae scrubber, my Surf2 has been growing nuts. It's been less then 7 days and I have to remove more. People are surprised when I open up the Surf2 and show them what I pull out with one hand" -- ReeferEric on the R2R site. pics:

"I stumbled upon [a SURF2] and took a chance ordering one. They are a really great algae scrubber" -- Reeffirstaid on R2R

"The [HOG.5] is working well" -- JT Powell

"All I can say about the HOG3 algae scrubber is WoW, I'm sure glad I saw it advertised on LA Fishguys youtube channel. It completely wiped out my severe case of Cyano Bacteria in 4 weeks, it is working like a champ. I was a little skeptical that it would work at first because it's very compact, but I am completely amazed on how great it's working. Thanks again for the great product" -- John Quezada

"My HOG1x is working great" -- Stefan Kolev

"Thank you! Working great! [HOG1.3]" -- Daniel Adelinis

"Happy to report that the SURF4 is growing lots of hair algae" -- Kidtango on the R2R site
