Thank you for taking the time to stop by and review
the information on our site. This section will give
you a background on the club, how it functions,
membership types and fees. We hope that after you have
visited the web site you would consider becoming an
active member of the Wisconsin Reef Society.
The Wisconsin Reef Society is a non-profit
organization dedicated to providing an environment and
community to educate. WRS strives to enhance ones reef
keeping and marine life skills and knowledge through
meetings, discussions, on-line chats and organized
presentations. WRS promotes trading, captive breeding
and coral propagation with a strong belief and
understanding for the conservation of the hobby. Above
all, it is a place for people with a common passion to
meet, exchange views, educate and have a good time.
WHAT GOES ON AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
The way things
work is that every month we have a scheduled
meeting. Meetings are generally hosted by club members
at their home, with the exact date and time determined
by the hosts availability (typically on weekends) as
opposed to a set time and place each month Members are
asked to "reserve" a month that they would like to
host a meeting and is typically done on a first come
first served basis with a preference to newer members
whose tanks have not yet been seen by most members.
Meetings are usually a social call for the first 30-45
minutes to allow the host to answer any questions
about his or her tank set-up. We then go into any club
news, treasurers report, club raffle, and then go
right into a topic of discussion that the host has
In addition to (or in lieu of) the standard meetings
we try to organize road trips, “behind the scenes”
tours, Guest Speakers, and/or Frag Swaps, etc. There
is also a club BBQ that is held in the summer
(June-August) and a Holiday Party that is held in
Some meetings may have a club raffle, which is one way
our club generates funds to help pay for speaker’s
fees, club supplies, web site hosting and other club
functions. We have several sponsors who donate
merchandise or provide discounts to WRS and its
members to help us grow as a functioning community.
The list of sponsors can be viewed on our SPONSORS
page. We also strive to focus our purchases with
“Group Buys” as members and club as a whole to the
vendors who have so graciously decided to support us.
In turn for their donation to WRS we offer them free
advertising on our web site (along with continued
repeat business with them). Both the sponsor and WRS
gain from this mutual relationship. To be eligible to
enter the raffle you MUST be a current PAID club
member. This entitles you to purchase raffle tickets
at the meetings. All funds are then put into the club
account for future use.
In the event that the club holds a "FREE" raffle
(where paid members are not required to purchase tickets)
you must be a paid member no less than 30 days prior to the raffle date.
Meetings usually run 2-3 hours. This is flexible and
you do not have to stay the whole time. You can leave
early if needed. Hosts usually have snacks and
refreshments but members are welcomed and usually do
bring things as well. The club BBQ and Holiday Party
are the only meetings where all attending members are
asked to bring a dish, dessert or drink to pass.
